Games That Rocked…Tom Livingstone’s World – #22: Super Smash Bros

Today’s article is by Tom Livingstone:

Title: Super Smash Bros

Format: N64, Virtual Console

Released: 19th November, 1999

As a child I was often alone. I recall a small dark room with no food or water…  I remember screaming.

Dramatic right?

Fear not intrepid game-blog reader, you haven’t stumbled upon a rough draft of ‘A Child Called It’ or some sweepy-fringed emo poetry. I’m merely setting the scene of my first memories as a gamer. I was alone because I would suffer no distractions. It was dark because I would do anything to avoid reflections on the screen. I was without food or water because my mother operated a strict no-snacks-upstairs policy. “You’ll only get Ribena everywhere,” she would insist. It was probably for the best; It wasn’t like I had time to eat or drink! Alex Kidd wasn’t going to save Miracle World on his own! Read the rest of this entry »

Hello Jon’s readers, I’m Paul Foxcroft. This guy:

PaulTrust me.

This will mean little to you, but I’m a human man, I live in London, I make my living by pretending; and like Jon, I like games. Here’s the quite simple request I’ve been putting off for a few days now…

“The brief is simple: 1,000 words or less, on a game that you love / has changed your perspective / made a big impact on you in some way.”

So has that eaten into the word count? Yes. But now, you and I swim in the sea of context. Brilliant.

A game that I love, has changed my perspective or has made a big impact on me. There’s so many, I mean really. THERE ARE SO VERY MANY. Read the rest of this entry »

Games That Rocked…Benzaemon’s World – #19: Sonic Blast Man

OUTGROWING YOUR PROBLEMS

Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Punch My Personal Issues

They say violence never solved anything.

They never played Sonic Blast Man.

I grew up in a tiny seaside town that had nothing to do in it. In my free time I’d make a sandwich and go into the woods for fifteen hours at a time or sit and wonder if black people really existed.

There was one toyshop, and as I didn’t give a shit about Sylvanian Families, there wasn’t much to spend pocket money on. When it came though, there was only one place it was going.

Going to the games arcade was like going to the once-yearly carnival – extreme excitement based around the blaring music and horrible lights, but tinged with the exhilarating fear of navigating through the crowd of chavs at the entrance and avoiding the gypsy owners.

Inside it was an Aladdin’s cave of games that the rest of the country was sick of. There was a three-player Aerosmith shoot ’em up that actually had Steve Tyler’s voice. In a bid to stay relevant your guns fired CDs. There was an amazing Spider-man arcade game that was glitched and sometimes your character just fell down dead; I asked for my money back once and was told ‘that’s how that game works’.

But it didn’t seem to matter. This was a place that I loved and somewhere that I could never possibly humiliate myself by allowing a woman to get sexually assaulted. Right? Read the rest of this entry »

When Jon asked me to write an article for his blog about a game I love, I thought several things:

  1. Who on Earth does Jon Gracey think he is, setting me homework? Still, I guess I’ll have to do it, I can’t just tell him to get bent. That would seem rude.

  2. I want bacon. I really fancy some bacon.

  3. I’m going to struggle to do this.

Games That Rocked My World – #17: Metal Gear Solid

Two short stories:

#1. I was about 8 years old. Maybe 9. We were on a Cub camp in Gilwell Park (Centre for Scouting in the UK, don’t you know) and for some reason we were running around in the forest after dark. I remember emerging from the woodland and pelting down a hill, with lots of other cubs running alongside. I don’t know why, but we were excited, and it was awesome. And this little devil in my ear goes: “Trip Angus Abbot up, Jon. It’ll be hilarious”.

Here’s all you need to know about Angus Abbot: he was (and still is) much bigger than me, and could totally beat me up. But I was a cheeky little turd, so I tripped him. It was glorious. I totally caught his leg, and he went flying. He got up, and started chasing me. I knew I was in for a battering. Read the rest of this entry »
